Walter Brueggemann puts forth a “fresh hearing of the gospel” communicated in Old Testament tradition. Brueggemann focuses on how we neglect how the Bible affirms human culture, capability, and responsibility as a part of the biblical narrative and gospel story. He zooms in on the book of Proverbs and the wisdom traditions it contains that affirm the world and celebrate culture.

The question posed by wisdom to our conventional theology concerns the role of man in determining the destiny of his community. In our conventional theology, and perhaps most clearly expressed in prayer practice, we leave these choices in the hands of God. We pray for peace. We pray for well-being. We pray for responsible government. This is not the case with wisdom. No doubt Israel’s wisdom teachers believe in prayer, but clearly they do not employ prayer as a way of passing along our responsibilities
